Hassan Wilson Ungrading: Lifting Learning Through Metacognition and Reflection

During the pandemic, many teachers and schools experimented with different grading policies. Some schools moved to pass/fail systems, while some teachers explored competency-based and equity-informed grading practices. An unexamined implication of these changes is the acknowledgment that grading and grades are problematic in various dimensions and can even exasperate mental health issues. As educational programming gets back to normal, schools have opportunities to rethink grades and grading practices. Join Hassan Wilson as he describes his own transition, first from traditional grading to competency- and equity-based models, and now to teaching grade-less. Hassan will describe techniques, policies and strategies to implement “ungrading” in your courses and explain how to leverage student metacognition and reflection to maximize learning.
